1 Person killed at University Park Mall bar
Mishawaka IN June 16 2017 A heavy police presence could be seen at the University Park Mall in Mishawaka Sunday morning as investigators worked on a deadly shooting in the parking lot of Bar Louie. They have identified the victim as 27-year-old Benito Estevan Bueno.
Police say this was originally called out as a bar fight involving numerous people at 2:40 a.m.
“Upon arrival, officers dispersed individuals in the lot and found one victim down on the ground suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound,” according to a release from St. Joseph County Metro Homicide. “Medical personnel were called to the scene by officers and declared that this gunshot wound victim was deceased.”
An autopsy Monday confirmed Bueon’s death was a homicide and that he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Several witnesses have been interviewed.
Metro Homicide is handling the investigation.
As of 8 a.m. a large portion of the parking lot in front of Bar Louie was still taped off with crime scene tape and WSBT 22 could see a body laying in the parking lot covered in a white sheet.
A large number of family and friends of the victim were gathered at the scene earlier.
Mall security was working to keep people off the property. Media was asked to moved back.
Mishawaka police say the scene should be cleared by the time the mall opens at 11 a.m.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all affected by this tragedy,” according to a statement from a UP Mall spokesman. The statement also read, “The management team at University Park Mall is working closely with all investigating law enforcement agencies as they continue their investigation into this morning’s incident.”
