Conyers GA Aug 26 2019
A 15-year-old suspect is in custody after a 12-year-old boy was found shot at a Rockdale County elementary school Friday evening, authorities said.
The boy was shot once at Peek’s Chapel Elementary School in unincorporated Conyers around 6:30 p.m.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he is stable in the intensive care unit, officials said Sunday.
Another boy has been detained and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery in connection with the shooting, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.
His name is not being released because he is a minor.
The incident is still under investigation, Deputy Lee Thomas said. No other details were released.
Peek’s Chapel, which is off Ga. 162 in the southern part of the county, did not have any events scheduled after school on Friday, Thomas confirmed. It is unclear what the wounded boy was doing on campus.
Cindy Ball, a spokeswoman for Rockdale County Public Schools, said the incident has district leaders “deeply concerned.”
“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the young man who was injured,” Ball said in a statement.
“Again, this occurred after hours when no students or staff were on campus. We will assist law enforcement as needed during their investigation.”
The shooting comes days after another 12-year-old boy was shot while leaving a high school football scrimmage game in Atlanta.
A bullet went through Isaiah Payton’s spine, according to his mother, Allison Wood.
