13-year-old fatally shot during carjacking of security officer
Washington DC October 30, 2023 A 13-year-old boy has died after he was shot during a carjacking in Northwest D.C. on Saturday, according to D.C. police.
The victim of the carjacking was described as an off-duty federal security officer.
The teenager has been identified as Vernard Toney, Jr., of Southeast D.C.
Toney was shot outside on the 600 block of D Street NW across from 7th Street in the Penn Quarter area, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. In a Sunday update, police said he died from his injuries.
According to the initial investigation, the carjacking victim was sitting in his car when two juveniles demanded he get out. Police said one of the juveniles was “holding his hand in his front waistband pocket as if he had a handgun.”
When the victim got out of the car, he shot Toney. The other juvenile ran away from the area.
Police said the carjacking victim was in his car before his shift. His firearm was legally owned. He is cooperating with the investigation into the 13-year-old’s death.
The officer’s gun was the only one recovered from the scene.
Police are also searching for the second carjacking suspect.
The scene of the shooting is just a few blocks away from Capital One Arena, where the Washington Wizards were playing their season home opener.
According to statistics from D.C. police, there have been 821 carjackings so far this year. Of the 134 people arrested, 84 of them were juveniles.
