Houma LA August 10 2021 A 60-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting Friday as she picked up her grandchildren from a Houma school, police said. Houma Police identified the suspect in the shooting as Jamanie Dotch, 17, of Wolff Parkway and said they consider him armed and dangerous. Arrest warrants have been issued for Dotch on charges of attempted-first-degree murder and possession of a firearm in a school zone, the agency said in a news release. Dotch reportedly escaped June 16 from the Bridge City Center for Youth in Shreveport, Houma Police said. The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 600 block of Grinage Street, when the woman was waiting in a car to pick up her grandchildren from St. Francis de Sales Elementary, police said. She was approached by a male who shot her in the lower torso before he ran away. The victim was taken to a local hospital. Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman said the woman was reported in stable condition Friday evening. Detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed video surveillance footage that shows Dotch riding a bike near Grinage and Point streets, Houma Police said. He then got off the bike and got into an argument with the woman he is accused of shooting. “Shortly thereafter, Dotch is observed armed with a weapon, running back to the bicycle and fleeing the area,” police said. Houma-Thibodaux’s Catholic bishop, Shelton Fabre, shared a letter Friday evening with parents about the shooting. “First, allow me to join my feelings with that of our entire community tonight in absolute shock and concern in regard to the shooting incident this afternoon,” Fabre wrote. “My prayers and that of our community are joined together tonight for the victim of this heinous crime.” Houma Police placed the school campus on lockdown the immediate aftermath of the shooting until the scene was cleared before classes ended, the bishop wrote. “No students were outside nor witnessed the incident, which occurred quite a distance from the school campus,” Fabre noted. He said the school and the Catholic diocese are assisting police in the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by phone at 1-800-743-7433 or online at crimestoppersbr.org. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 in cash if the information leads to an arrest.
