3 more arrested in organized shoplifting ring that netted millions
Jersey City NJ April 16 2019 Three more arrests have been made in connection with a highly organized shoplifting ring that stole millions in merchandise, police said.
Shaquetta Saintange, 29, Shakira Watson, 39, and Ronald Staggers, 57, were arrested on April 10 and 11 as part of Operation Bag and Boost, a 14-month investigation by the Jersey City Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
The three arrests bring the total number taken into custody to 14. Warrants have been issued for nine others police say participated in the ring that victimized chain-store pharmacies and a beauty supplies chain in seven New Jersey counties as well as Queens, Nassau County and Suffolk County in New York, and Connecticut.
All three were charged with conspiracy, shoplifting and fencing, Wallace-Scalcione said. Saintange and Watson, who were arrested Wednesday, were additionally charged with theft. Staggers, who was arrested Thursday, was additionally charged with receiving stolen property.
Police recovered $3 million in stolen goods that were stored in a Jersey City home. Police also froze $4.5 million from two bank accounts, Deputy Police Chief Mark Miller said on March 28 when police announced 11 arrests.
Miller said the stolen items were placed on the popular auction online auction website eBay and shipped to unwitting purchasers.
The investigation was initiated after Bayonne police noticed a pattern of arrests in which the suspect told them they were given a “catalog” and paid to steal certain items.
On March 21 police executed three search warrants in Jersey City and another in West Babylon, New York. and made the 11 arrests.
