317 Unlicensed Security Guards Arrested
Charlotte NC Dec 11 2020
Businesses using persons as unlicensed and untrained security guards has always been a problem nationwide but in recent year, that trend has continued to rise with no end in sight.
On Sunday night, the sheriff’s department in New York City arrested three more persons employed as security guards and charged them for not complying with state requirements for licensure.
This brings the total number of people arrested for working in the security field without a license to 317 this year.
We talked with regulatory agencies in California, New York, and Virginia and all agree that more needs to be done. Some say a lack of personnel to conduct frequent inspections, budget cuts and a misunderstanding of who needs to be licensed are part of the continued increase in violations.
Terry McClure is an example of how the lack of checks and balances leads to some people taking advantage of the system and of business owners.
McClure operated an unlicensed security company between New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania for eleven years before shutting him down.
A complaint from a former employee, also an unlicensed security guard, about not being paid ultimately ended McClure’s business ventures.
Nightclubs, illegal gaming rooms, strip clubs and retail establishments are often found to
have unlicensed security personnel on duty.
