Ct club bouncer nabbed with AR-15
BRIDGEPORT CT Nov 15 2017 – The bouncer at a local strip bar caused quite a stir as he rode his bicycle through the city’s East Side recently carrying an AR-15 assault rifle.
Louis Varvella, 49, of Alfred Street, was charged with breach of peace, illegal alteration of a firearms identification, possession of an assault rifle and possession of prohibited sized gun magazines.
During Varvella’s arraignment hearing Monday, Superior Court Judge William Holden reduced the defendant’s bond from $100,000 to $50,000 and continued the case to Dec. 1.
Shortly after 9:30 Thursday morning police said they began receiving calls of a man riding a bicycle near Beardsley Park carrying an assault rifle.
Officers finally caught up with Varvella when he stopped outside a florist on North Washington Avenue. They said they immediately seized the rifle along with a cloth bag.
Police said the assault rifle, with its obscured serial number, was unloaded but they found two high capacity magazines containing a total of 61 rounds of .223-caliber bullets in the bag.
Varvella told officers he had found the rifle on River Street and had been in the process of riding to the Police Department to turn it in when he was stopped, police said.
