4 Birmingham armored car company employees charged in felony thefts of cash
Birmingham AL Sept 2 2017 Four Birmingham area employees of a nationwide cash distribution company are charged with felony crimes after an investigation turned up missing money.
James Dustin Blackwell, Samuel Earl Burks, Malcolm Samuel LaMotte and Nicholas Sean Sanders were employees of Loomis Fargo Inc. Blackwell and Burks are charged with first-degree theft of property, while LaMotte and Sanders are charged with third-degree theft of property.
The four were arrested between Aug. 18 and Aug. 23, according to court and jail records. Each have been released on bonds ranging from $5,000 to $1,000.
Efforts to reach company officials for comment weren’t immediately successful.
Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Joe Roberts said the company noticed money shortages and started an investigation. The job duties of Burks, 24, and Blackwell, 23, were to stock ATM’s around the Birmingham area. Both are accused of stealing $4,000 each, Roberts said.
They were arrested on Aug 23, and released from Jefferson County Jail the same day after posting $5,000 bond each.
Roberts said LaMotte, 25, was a driver for Loomis and is accused of taking money from deposits he was picking up for the company. Investigators found several different times where the cash turned in was less than what he picked up. He is accused of stealing $965.
LaMotte was arrested Aug. 22 and released from the Jefferson County Jail the same day after posting $1,000 bond.
Sanders, 22, was also an employee and accused of stealing money from drops he was making to different Loomis customers. His charged involves the theft of $815.
He was arrested Aug. 18, and released from the county jail the same day after posting $1,000 bond.
All four are set to make their first court appearance on Sept. 13.
