4 jailers arrested in Marshall County Alabama following riot
MARSHALL COUNTY, AL July 17 2018
Four jailers in Marshall County have been arrested following a jail disturbance.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says that they are working to restore order to the jail following Wednesday’s disturbance. They say that following that disturbance, an investigation was conducted and it was determined how contraband was entering the jail.
Four jailers were reportedly providing inmates with cellphones and tobacco products.
George Gregory Gass, 29, Robert Lindsey, 32, Braxton Pierce Lamb, 20, and Javon Cortez, 21, have all been booked and all have posted $500 bond, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities also say that the all four were relieved of their duties on Friday and the investigation continued over the weekend.
“Well, first of all, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Because we know the security concerns of the jail. So you know where to start looking. And obviously when you got an employee, you got a huge problem, huge problem, because they know what the access is. They have access. And you got to stop this stuff,” said Sheriff Scott Walls.
Walls said they were investigating other employees over contraband. He said if they find any, those employees will face criminal charges.
“I think there has been contraband brought into this jail by other employees, yes,” said Walls.
Phil Sims, who takes over as sheriff in January, has said he’s concerned by what he’s seen at the jail and is staying abreast of the situation there.
“Well, if their investigation showed that there are more cellphones being brought in by employees or personnel then they need to be held accountable so the right action I believe was taken,” said Sims.
