4 Memphis teens arrested, charged in major crime spree involving carjacking, high school bus
MEMPHIS, TN Jan 28 2019Â Four people have been arrested and charged in a crime spree that includes a carjacking, shooting at a bystander, and shooting at a Manassas High School bus.
Police identified the suspects as a 14-year-old female, a 15-year-old female, a 16-year-old male, and 16-year-old Damerion Merriweather, who is also charged in a Jan. 20 homicide.
The suspects are all charged in three separate but connected incidents in Memphis:
A carjacking in the 4200 block of Coventry on Jan. 24
Aggravated assault in the 1100 block of N. Manassas on Jan. 25
Aggravated assault on Jackson/Decatur on Jan. 25
On Thursday, Jan. 24, police said two suspects struck a 76-year-old man and carjacked his maroon 2001 Toyota Corolla.
The following day on Friday, Jan. 25, police responded to a shooting at the school bus. Police said the stolen maroon Corolla, occupied by five suspects, fired several shots at the bus, which shattered two windows. No injuries were reported.
Also on Jan. 25, officers said a victim was at the intersection of Jackson and Decatur when four to five male juveniles in a maroon or red four door vehicle rolled down their windows and started firing shots at him. The victim told officers he ran and hid behind a garbage can until they drove off. Afterward, the victim looked down and realized he’d been shot in the hand. Police said the suspects responsible for this shooting fit the description of the suspects in the Manassas shooting.
Later, officers observed the Corolla traveling eastbound on Jackson toward I-40 from Manassas. They tried to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped at Lee and Ayers, and the five suspects got out of the vehicle and ran off.
Officers apprehended four of the five suspects and were unable to locate the fifth. No information has been given about the fifth suspect at this time. Police recovered a black BB gun on the ground near the vehicle and located two additional black BB guns inside the vehicle.
