6 school safety agents hurt during fight at Manhattan high school
NEW YORK NY November 3 2021 Six school safety agents were injured during a fight that broke out at a Manhattan high school Wednesday sparked by a social media dispute, sources told the Daily News.
According to the outlet, the brawl happened at the Washington Irving High School campus in Gramercy around lunchtime when a feud that began on Instagram Live between two students turned physical in the school’s auditorium with additional students as well as school safety agents attempted to intervene.
“There was like two security guards that were trying to leave because they were getting jumped on, even though people were trying to stop the fight, people were still fighting and jumping in,” one student told the Daily News.

Six out of a total of 15 school safety agents at the 3,500-student campus, which houses six schools were injured in the fight and transported to Beth Israel Hospital for evaluation, according to the union that represents them.
“Violence has absolutely no place in our schools, and our outstanding School Safety Agents immediately moved to intervene and stop this incident,” DOE spokesman Nathaniel Styer said. “The school will engage all parties involved and take appropriate disciplinary action, as needed.”
After a series of recent incidents involving guns in school, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced earlier this week that New York City will increase the number of random metal detectors at some public schools.
