Seven security officers in five states have been attacked, beaten, robbed and kidnapped at firework stands and tents during the past three days according to police.
Police in Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Connecticut and Florida have all reported violent incidents involving robberies of security officers on duty at firework businesses.
Spring Hill Kansas police are investigating the armed robbery that happened at a firework tent early Monday morning where a security guard was also beaten.
According to police, it happened at the 18700 block of South 169 Highway. Skyler Schimmel said he was helping a friend by working the overnight security shift.
“I was in the tent, making sure no one was stealing,” Schimmel said. “I was up all night watching TV on my laptop. Didn’t hear nobody come in. I looked up. There they were. Had a gun pointed right at me. One of them said ‘Don’t move,’ and I just froze.”
Spring Hill police say two men stole fireworks from the tent, along with Schimmel’s Bluetooth speaker, phone and laptop.
“They basically knocked me out,” Schimmel said.
The security guard was treated at a hospital for his injuries.
“When they hit, they busted a bone right here where I can’t blow my nose or breathe,” Schimmel said.
Connecticut police are investigating a violent assault and robbery in New Haven. Thieves stole thousands of dollars of merchandise as they fled.
Miami Gardens Florida and Dallas Texas also are investigating attacks on security officers who were on duty at firework stands.
In the Miami Gardens incident, two armed teens carjacked the security officer and then crashed the vehicle causing heavy damage. Police took several teens into custody.
Each year, numerous robberies and attacks on security officers occur at firework stands and at least two security officers have been killed during robberies in recent years.
