800 NYPD school safety agents moved to help MTA reopening efforts
NEW YORK CITY NY June10 2020— As New York City begins Phase 1 of reopening Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced some big changes in public transportation.
One such change is the decision to move approximately 800 of the NYPD’s school safety agents to help throughout the MTA public transportation system.
De Blasio said the agents will be deployed at high priority stations, where they will provide commuters with free face coverings and help promote social distancing.
The move comes as the transit authority begins resuming regular service across subways, buses, trains and ferries as ridership is expected to increase as the city slowly reopens.
School safety agents have mostly been sidelined for the past three months as New York schools have been closed due the coronavirus pandemic.
MTA Interim President Sarah Feinberg told PIX11 Monday morning more about how they’re keeping riders safe as they get back on track.
