85-year-old security officer detains car theft suspect
Vallejo CA July 2 2018 A man was arrested for car theft, hit and run and violating his probation on Friday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Vallejo Police Department.
At 7:55 a.m., a man was driving his car southbound on Solano Boulevard. His car was having mechanical issues, so his daughter was following behind him in her car, police said. He pulled over when his car started having more difficulties, and his daughter pulled in behind him. Leaving her car running, she got out to help her father.
A man who was walking northbound allegedly jumped into the daughter’s driver’s seat and immediately backed it out into oncoming traffic, police said. The suspect allegedly struck a car containing a 76-year-old woman. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
After the woman’s car was struck, an onlooker jumped into the daughter’s car and wrestled a bit before he managed to get the car keys from the ignition, police said.
The suspect allegedly then jumped out of the car and ran towards the AM/PM at 4301 Sonoma. An 85-year-old security guard was at the gas station filling up and managed to detain the suspect, police said.
Arrested was Dustin Daffern, 25. He was booked into the Solano County Jail for vehicle theft, felony hit and run causing injury and violating his probation.
His bail was set at $48,333, and at press time he was still in custody.
