Austin security guard shot at man who tried to run him over
Austin TX Aug 10 2018 A security guard opened fire early Monday on a driver in Southeast Austin who reportedly had thrown a woman out of an SUV before aiming the vehicle directly at the guard, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police identified the driver as 25-year-old Cruz Alejandro Maldonado, who faces a charge of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, a first-degree felony, the affidavit said.
According to the document, the security guard was patrolling an area in the 4800 block of Nuckols Crossing, near East Stassney Lane, around 2:25 a.m. when he heard a woman screaming.
The woman stepped into the road from a nearby car wash and waved the guard down.
She was bleeding from her mouth and blood dripped down her chin, the affidavit said. Both of her knees also had gashes, according to the report.
When the guard got out of his car to check on the woman, she told him the father of her kids threw her out of her car, the affidavit said.
As the guard stood by his car, he heard screeching coming from the car wash and saw a small beige SUV preparing to turn onto Nuckols Crossing.
The guard told authorities he stepped out in front of his vehicle and put his hand up to get the SUV to stop, the affidavit said.
According to the report, the guard told police he left plenty of room for the SUV to pass, but the driver of the SUV revved its engine and drove straight at him.
The guard drew a handgun and fired two shots at the windshield of the SUV, which then veered off and passed him and the woman, the affidavit said.
The guard fired another shot at the rear window of the SUV after it passed, the affidavit said, then he called police.
Maldonado was not in custody at the Travis County Jail on Wednesday, according to jail records.
