At least 10 shot at San Bernardino, Calif., apartment complex
San Bernardino, Calif. Sept 3 2018
At least 10 people were shot Sunday night at an apartment complex in San Bernardino, Calif. — with at least three of the victims reportedly in “extremely critical” condition.
The investigation was in its early stages, leaving many questions unanswered, San Bernardino police Capt. Rich Lawhead said early Monday at the scene on East Lynwood Drive, north of the 210 Freeway and east of Waterman Avenue.
The shooting was reported about 10:45 p.m. Sunday. Officers arrived to find an unruly crowd and the wounded in a common area of an apartment complex at 1277 E. Lynwood Drive. There, people had gathered to play a game, possibly dice, Lawhead said.
Police set up a large perimeter around the crime scene, according to KTVN-TV in Los Angeles.
Multiple handguns and rifles were fired by gunmen who fled the scene, according to Capt. Richard Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.
Officers arrived at the location Sunday night to find an “unruly crowd” at a common area in the apartment complex, Lawhead said. It appeared the crowd of people may have been playing a game of dice when the shooting occurred, the Press-Enterprise reported.
“It was a chaotic scene,” Lawhead said.
So far no arrests have been made and there was no immediate description given for any suspects. Lawhead said there was gang activity in the area but it was not immediately clear if that was connected to the shooting.
Lawhead said there is gang activity in the area, but that this early in the investigation he could not yet attribute the shooting to a gang rivalry.
There are homes within the crime scene. Nearby at the intersection with North Golden Avenue there are two auto-repair shops, a market and a liquor store.
Patrons at one of the two nearby bars said they didn’t hear any gunshots because of the loud music playing.
The wounded were taken to three hospitals: Loma Linda University Medical Center, St. Bernadine Medical Center in San Bernardino and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
The incident comes as community leaders have already expressed concern about violence in the city this summer.
It is unknown if the complex had had form of security patrols.
