3 teens shot and critically wounded near a South Side Chicago high school
Chicago IL Sept 11 2018 Three teenagers were shot and critically wounded Monday near a South Side high school, authorities said.
The teens, ages 16, 17 and 18, were wounded in the 700 block of East 91st Street in the Burnside neighborhood on the city’s South Side just after 4 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Two victims ran to Chatham Academy High School, 9035 S. Langley Ave., but officials couldn’t immediately confirm whether they were students there. The third victim was found a short distance away, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
The 16-year-old old was shot in the left shoulder, the 17-year-old was struck in the upper left leg and the 18-year-old was was wounded in the right arm and left armpit, according to Chicago police.
All three victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, authorities said. Police said they did not yet know how the shooting occurred, but were questioning two “persons of interest,” a police spokeswoman said Monday evening.
The afternoon shooting occurred about four blocks from where a 21-year-old man was shot earlier in the day. That victim suffered a gunshot wound to the neck in the 800 block of East 89th Street just after 1:30 p.m., police said in a media notification. The man was also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, authorities said. The man was sitting in the area when someone came out of an alley just to the north and fired several shots, hitting the man, then ran off, police said.
Detectives are investigating whether the shootings may have been connected, police spokesman Tom Ahern said.
About 11 a.m., about 2½ miles away in the 10000 block of South State Street, a 19-year-old man was shot in the left hip, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.
Area South detectives were investigating the shootings, but no arrests had been made, police said.
Through Saturday, Chicago had about 560 fewer shootings and about 120 fewer homicides than it did through the same time last year, according to data compiled by the Tribune.
