Parolee Accused Of Trying To Grab Hospital Security Officer’s Gun
OAK LAWN, IL Sept 13 2018– A Chicago man was restrained and arrested after he tried to grab an armed security officer’s gun at Advocate Christ Medical Center, prosecutors said.
Tywon Meeks, 27, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on two felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer.
Meeks is currently on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections where he was serving a three-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon.
Meeks went to the hospital on Sept. 10 to visit his brother, who had apparently been shot in Chicago.
The prosecutor said that Meeks began acting erratically and was asked to leave by hospital staff. Meeks left the hospital but re-entered through the emergency room, where he allegedly started yelling at security officers.
The security officers placed Meeks in a wheelchair and were trying to get him out of the building, when he pushed an officer’s face and tried to grab his gun, the prosecutor said. Meeks was taken into custody when Oak Lawn police arrived.
The assistant public defender told the judge that Meeks’ arms had been restrained on both sides after he was placed in the wheelchair.
A pre-trial safety assessment flagged Meeks for violence. The judge set bail at $300,000. Meeks is due back in court Oct. 9 in Bridgeview.
