Man jumps, attempts suicide at Destiny USA mall
SYRACUSE, N.Y. October 5 2018 — A man tried to kill himself Wednesday morning inside Destiny USA in Syracuse, police said.
A man in his 20s jumped from the second or third floor inside the mall shortly after 9 a.m., said Sgt. Richard Helterline, a Syracuse Police Department spokesman. The incident happened in the atrium by the elevators.
The man was conscious and breathing when police arrived at the mall. He was rushed to a hospital with injuries that do not appear life-threatening, Helterline said.
An American Medical Response ambulance left Destiny USA around 9:30 a.m. with its sirens wailing and emergency lights flashing. Soon after, the Syracuse firefighters parked near the entrance near the carousel also left.
Officers met with security guards in the atrium on the bottom level of the mall. They stood in a circle around jeans and a pair of boots piled on the floor.
Aiden McGuire, a mall spokesman, said mall officials are working with police to investigate the suicide attempt.
“Our thoughts are with this individual and their family during this difficult time,” he said.
