Greenville woman charged with human trafficking, impersonating Homeland Security officer
GREENVILLE, SC June 12 2017 A Greenville woman is charged with human trafficking and impersonating a Homeland Security officer
In late 2016, the Greenville Police Department joined the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Task Force by assigning a detective to investigate crimes related to federal and state human trafficking laws.
In early 2017, in conjunction with HSI, the assigned detective began receiving tips about possible victims of human trafficking.
A subsequent investigation quickly led investigators to Veronica Perdomo.
Investigators determined that Perdomo was representing herself to different individuals as an attorney and agent of Homeland Security who worked directly with immigration officials and could help them with their legal status and provide them with legal documents in exchange for money.
Police say the investigation revealed that the crimes began in March 2014 and continued into 2017.
Authorities say they later discovered that Perdomo, who was introduced to her victims by word of mouth, extorted more than $20,000 from 12 victims through her fraudulent representation.
Perdomo is currently being held in the Greenville County Detention Center on no bond and is charged with the following offenses:
12 counts of trafficking
Seven counts of blackmail or extortion
12 counts of obtaining signature or property under false pretenses
One count of fraudulently impersonating an officer to secure property
Anyone who thinks that they many have been victimized by Veronica Perdomo is asked to call the Greenville Police Department at 864-271-5333.
