National Guard and other security officers patrol Florida High High School
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. November 2 2018– Viewers have been raising questions about security ever since Bay County shelters were consolidated into one at Arnold High School.
“It’s easy to say security is a priority but we’re trying to put our money where our mouth is and hire enough folks to provide that type of security,” said Bay District School Board Vice President Steve Moss.
From the looks of it, the shelter at Arnold High School may have more than enough security.
“It’s a variety of different types of security,” said Moss. “Everything from some national guard folks some Bay County Sheriffs Deputies, still some form the Bay District Schools Deputies.”
According to Moss, the school is sheltering nearly 400 people. “All the pre-k here on the beach is here at Arnold,” said moss. “So we’ll have one officer dedicated just to the Pre-K hallway another officer head just to the head start hallway, so those folks will always be there”
The gym is one of the facilities that are only open to students at Arnold High School. Athletic Director Rick Green said they will have additional security during practice and games.
“There is nothing more important than our student-athletes’ safety,” said Green. “Our coach checks in, as they come in with this security personnel and then he points out every player or member of the team.”
The performance arts center and other places used for practices are for school use only. Green said it’s a way to help students get back into the swing of things.
“I can’t imagine what it would be like for a kid to go through this,” said Green. “They need that normal activity back. Well, this is normal to them to be here.”
Green says student-athletes are allowed to practice from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. He said it will be a few weeks before Arnold High School hosts a game, but they plan to have security at all games on campus.
