Riverside man charged in disturbance with school security
RIVERSIDE, IL December 15 2018— A Riverside man was arrested after trespassing at Riverside Brookfield High School on Wednesday, Dec. 12, police said. Jacob Alexander Schaefer, 20, was charged with one count of criminal trespassing and one count of disorderly conduct. Police said the incident did not meet the threshold for felony charges per Illinois statute. Schaefer was given a Formal Trespass warning by Riverside Brookfield High School personnel.
Police said they received a 911 call at 7:16 a.m. from a Riverside Brookfield High School security officer reporting a disturbance in the school involving an individual that was not a student. Schaefer had walked into the school before school hours and was acting strangely.
According to police, when Schaefer was confronted by security personnel, he continued to make nonsensical statements and when approached by the security officer, he fled on foot inside the building. Schaefer then fled the building to Ridgewood Road and then eastbound crossing First Avenue into Riverside.
Police said he was spotted at Forest and Kimbard and taken into custody without incident. No one was injured during this disturbance or Schaefer’s arrest.
According to police, it was learned during the investigation that Schaefer had walked into the high school and would not take his hands out of his pockets. He was asked to take his hands out of his pockets by security personnel, but he refused. Police said he told responding officers he just wanted a drink of water.
As this response to the high school involved numerous police vehicles, Riverside Police Department said it received phone calls asking if there was some type of armed confrontation that had occurred. Police said no such confrontation took place; Schaefer was not armed and never had any weapons on him during this incident.
