Portland mall shut down during armed suicidal incident
Portland OR December 25 2018
Just two days before Christmas with a mall packed full of shoppers, police and tactical units were called out to a local shopping center because of a man having a mental health issue.
Portland police responded to the Century 16 Eastport Plaza, and put it in lockout during the incident.
The area around 4040 SE 82nd Ave., was also shut down as police negotiated with a suicidal armed man.
Police said that it all started when a man called 911, telling dispatchers that he was armed and suicidal.
It prompted a lockout requiring anyone in the mall to stay inside, said Clyde Lewis, who was at the mall to watch a movie with his wife.
Tactical officers were eventually able to take the man into custody without incident.
There were no reports of injuries. Police did not say whether a weapon was found.
The man was to be taken away by ambulance to a mental health facility, police said.
The mall resumed normal operations shortly afterward.
