Alburqurque bank guard arrested in thefts
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. December 27 2018— Authorities say a former security guard is facing federal charges after he stole bank cards from an Albuquerque ATM more than a dozen times and used them to spend thousands on a shopping spree over several months.
FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said Manuel Iturralde-Carrizalez, 45, was taken into custody on charges of bank larceny.
Court records show he is already serving five years probation after being convicted of stealing over $35,000 in cash from a Rio Rancho ATM in 2015 and had bounced between security companies in the area that left him with “experience servicing ATMs.”
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, the Washington Federal bank near Osuna and Jefferson NE received “numerous complaints” in the past few months of customer cards being “retained” by the ATM and later having fraudulent charges put on them.
Agents say the ATM at the branch was accessed 23 times between Nov. 4 and Dec. 16 to steal cards and, afterward, fraudulent charges were racked up on eight bank accounts totaling $3,800.
According to the complaint, security footage at the branch showed Iturralde-Carrizalez using a key to steal cards from the ATM while wearing a security uniform.
Fisher confirmed that Iturralde-Carrizalez did not work for the bank but would not say if he was an employee for a different security company.
Agents say officers caught Iturralde-Carrizalez in the act on Dec. 21, arresting him at the Washington Federal branch after watching him access the ATM.
Iturralde-Carrizalez told agents he went to the ATM to get bank cards and had done so many times over a period of four to five months before using the cards to shop at Walmarts across the Albuquerque area.
Court records show Iturralde-Carrizalez was sentenced to five years probation after being convicted of larceny over $20,000 in 2017, after he stole over $35,000 in cash from a U.S. Bank ATM on N.M. 528 in late September 2015.
