Decatur nightclub guard kicked, beaten in New Year’s Eve assault
DECATUR IL January 5 2019 — A security guard working a New Year’s Eve party Monday at a Decatur nightclub was left with a broken nose and a concussion after being set upon by several men and punched and kicked in the head.
Decatur police detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the 28-year-old guard was treated in a hospital and needed four stitches for a laceration across his nose. He was also left with facial bruising and swelling to the back of his skull.
Copeland said the violence broke out around 11:45 p.m. at the KushKoma club, 925 N. Water St. He described the guard as working the front door when people began rushing outside in a panic after hearing someone armed with a gun had entered the club through a back door.
“The guard said he went inside to see what was happening and had the music stopped and the lights turned on,” added Copeland. “And then he said someone punched him in the head and he was suddenly attacked by numerous people, knocked to the ground and punched and kicked in the face and head.”
Copeland said police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the violence to come forward. Call the police at (217)424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477(TIPS).
