A retired police lieutenant fatally shot himself inside a New Jersey police headquarters after he was arrested over a domestic violence incident, officials said Wednesday.
Patrick Montella, 58, was being processed Tuesday night at the Bloomfield Police Department when he shot himself.
The retired Newark police officer was pronounced dead at a hospital, officials said.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office put out a statement, but didn’t say where Montella got the gun or where he was in the building when he pulled the trigger.
It was the second time in seven months that a detainee in a New Jersey police station shot himself.
Jermaine Covington, 41, a suspect in a carjacking, grabbed a gun from a cop and fatally shot himself at the Hillside Police Department in June.
