Nurse, security guard in serious condition after assault at Southlake hospital

A man has been charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm following an attack that left two hospital workers with serious injuries.
The ordeal began Jan. 17 at around 6 a.m. when police were called to a home in the Glenway neighbourhood of Newmarket following reports of a man knocking at the front door.
After arriving and discovering the man in someone’s home, a York Regional Police representative said there were concerns for the man’s well-being and he was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre.
The man said he was from Richmond Hill and he’d taken an Uber up to Newmarket, according to police.
Later that day, after 2 p.m., police received a call from the hospital about an assault on two staff. Police were told by staff it was not an emergency and the suspect had been apprehended. However, when police arrived an hour later, they discovered a nurse and a security guard with serious injuries.
Min Byung-Moon, 21, of Toronto, is charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm and breaching probation, and will be held until an expected hearing on Jan. 29.
Kathryn Perrier, a Southlake spokesperson, said the situation escalated quickly and the hospital has launched a full investigation into the incident.
“At Southlake, safety is a top priority,” she said in a written statement. “We have done a tremendous amount of work in collaboration with our unions over the past few years to make sure our staff and patients are as safe as possible.”
