Troy Beaumont hospital patient commits suicide
Troy MI Feb 5 2019
Troy police are investigating after a patient at Troy Beaumont hospital apparently sneaked a handgun into a room and fatally shot himself Saturday afternoon.
Sgt. Meghan Lehman said officers were called to the hospital about 12:30 p.m. to respond to a report of a shooting inside of a patient’s room. Police went to the room on the sixth floor, where they found a male patient suffered from a gunshot wound.
Lehman said the man was rushed into surgery, but died a short time later.
“Apparently he had brought the gun with him,” the police spokeswoman said. “He was alone in the room at the time this occurred.”
Lehman said she was limited by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) privacy law from releasing much information on the incident.
Authorities believe the shooting was intentional.
“There is no indication anyone else in the hospital was in any danger,” she said.
A hospital spokesman referred a reporter to Troy police for any information on the incident.
“We are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation,” said Mark Geary, director of media relations for Troy Beaumont.
The hospital is located at 44201 Dequindre Road, south of M-59 on the border of Macomb and Oakland counties.
