Shoplifter assaults security-flees in mobility scooter

A security guard has been hurt while trying to stop an alleged thief on a mobility scooter on Friday.
At about 10am on February 1 staff at the Forestville Coles spotted a man on a mobility scooter loading fresh meat into a bag before passing the self service checkouts and meeting another man buying orange juice at the counter.
Staff watched and when the two men tried to leave the store without paying for the meat the security guard approached them and asked to see inside their bags.
Then without responding to the security guard’s commands the man in the scooter drove straight at him and hit his foot, Northern Beaches Police allege.
‘He then backed up, hitting another person in the legs, before taking a second run at the guard,’ a police statement read.
‘Accelerating so the scooter’s front wheels rose to hit the man in the chest, knocking him over and inflicting multiple injuries and grazes.’
After regathering himself the security guard attempted to photograph the man in the scooter but was allegedly struck across the head by a bottle of orange juice being held by the second man.
Both men were last seen heading towards the Darley Street end of the Forestville Coles centre.
