Des Moines security guard charged in Water Works Park shooting
DES MOINES, Iowa July 3 2017
A security guard is facing charges after police say he shot at a car at Water Works Park in a bizarre incident reported in May.
This weekend, police charged Eugene McGrath with reckless discharge of a firearm causing property damage. That’s an aggravated misdemeanor.
Police say Scott Richardson, 50, was leaving Water Works Park around 1 a.m. when a car with flashing amber-colored lights pulled in behind.
In the police report Richardson, stated he saw the amber lights behind him and assumed it was security making sure he was leaving the park.
Des Moines Police say he had no obligation to pull over for the security guards. The report says the security guards just wanted to tell the Richardson that the park was closed and that he could have been towed.
When Richardson didn’t stop, the security guards went around him and parked, blocking off the exit.
The police report shows when Richardson still did not stop, McGrath fired three shots into his radiator.
The security guards made Richardson exit his car, they put him in handcuffs and called the police.
