SC prison guard allegedly started police chase with officer hanging on car, warrant says
Dorchester County SC March 28 2019
A South Carolina prison guard allegedly led investigators on a high-speed chase after corrections officials tried to search her car for contraband, according to her arrest warrant.
Bertha Ann Shuler, a correctional officer at Lieber Correctional Institution, was charged Friday with assault and battery, resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and misconduct in office, according to a statement from the Department of Corrections.
Shuler was stopped while entering Lieber Correctional — which is a maximum-security prison in Dorchester County — for a random contraband search, according to her arrest warrant. Opening the door to her car, Shuler allegedly jumped back in and sped away.
A Police Services officer was standing near the car and jumped onto the vehicle, according to the warrant. Department of Corrections investigators gave chase, but Shuler continued to speed away with one of the investigators still hanging on, according to the warrant.
Eventually, the officer was able to get off of the vehicle, but Shuler continued to run, according to the statement. She was later captured and arrested.
