Niagara Regional Police Officer charged with attempted murder of another officer
TOWN OF PELHAM, ON CANADA March 31 2019— The Niagara Regional Police Service announced Thursday an officer has been arrested and faces multiple charges including attempted murder following an alleged shooting incident that involved another officer in November 2018.
According to a report, on November 29th 2018 just after noon, two Niagara Regional Police Service officers were in the area of Roland Road and Sulphur Springs Drive in the Town of Pelham, Ontario which is around 20 miles outside of Niagara Falls, New York.
Police say an interaction occurred between the two officers that resulted in a shooting incident.
A 28-year member of the force had to be transported to a local hospital and then to an out-of-town trauma center as a result, he was listed in stable condition following the shooting.
The NRPS announced Thursday that Sergeant Shane Donovan has been arrested and faces charges for these alleged offenses:
Attempted murder
Aggravated assault
Assault with a weapon
Niagara Regional Police Chief Bryan MacCulloch released a statement on the matter:
“There is little doubt that this incident has had a tremendous impact on our community and our members. At this time, we must respect the judicial process and allow this matter to continue to unfold before the courts. It is important to note that this is an isolated incident; I ask for your continued support of our members and all of those involved.”
The Niagara Regional Police Services Board Chair Ken Gansel also released a statement in regards to the incident:
“This incident is clearly deeply concerning and we offer our full support to Chief Bryan MacCulloch and the command team as they work with both the SIU and the OPP while supporting the members of the Niagara Regional Police Service. On behalf of the Police Services Board, I would like to thank the community for their on-going trust as we move through this judicial process.”
