Allentown bar security guard shoots man who fired into the air
Allentown PA April 15 2019
Allentown police said they are investigating a shooting that left a man wounded outside an Airport Road nightclub early Saturday morning.
Capt. Glenn Granitz said the shooting occurred just after 2 a.m. in the parking lot of Chicago Restaurant and Club Gravity on the 1100 block of Airport Road.
The wounded man, whose identity has not been released, was in stable condition at a hospital, Granitz said.
He said Saturday evening that all parties have been identified and accounted for. He expects charges to be filed.
An eyewitness said the shooting occurred after a fight among about six people in the parking lot. He said several security guards from the club tried to break it up, with one using pepper spray on a man.
That man’s friend, the witness said, then fired about three gunshots into the air as he was getting into his car.
As the shooter drove through the parking lot to leave, a security guard fired several shots at his car, the witness said, causing it to crash into a wall.
The witness said the wounded man got out of the car on his own and was handcuffed by security guards.
Granitz would not confirm the witness’s account.
Anthony DeLeon, the club’s manager, said that on a typical night, about 10 security guards are working, with four of them armed.
“We do our best to keep the crowd safe,” he said.
The armed guards were in the lot as the scuffle took place, DeLeon said. A man who had not been in the club Friday night, pulled up in a car and fired several shots, he said.
“He let off at least four shots,” DeLeon said.
One of the club’s armed guards fired in self-defense, DeLeon said. He would not confirm if his guard shot the man in the car.
