Man brutally attacks Gettysburg Hospital security officer while trying to steal car
Gettysburg PA April 27 2019 A Hagerstown, Maryland man was arrested and charged after police say he assaulted a Gettysburg Hospital Security Officer and attempted to steal a hospital vehicle.
Patrick Carlton Morant, 48, was transported to the hospital on April 15 by ambulance.
He was requesting medical treatment and then would refuse treatment, according to an affidavit filed with District Judge Matthew Harvey.
Hospital staff had to tell security that if Morant was refusing treatment, he had to leave.
Morant left the hospital, but was seen on security cameras taking rocks from near the entrance, the affidavit states.
When a security officer drove up and approached him, the officer had to tell Morant several times that he was trespassing and needed to leave.
Morant began to walk away toward the exit, but then ran back and jumped into the driver’s seat of the officer’s hospital vehicle, police said in the affidavit.
A physical altercation started when the officer tried to regain control of the vehicle. Morant was pulled from the vehicle, and the officer fell and slammed his head on the ground.
The officer was knocked out and another security officer ran across the parking lot and kept Morant from escaping, until police arrived.
Police were dispatched to the scene at about 11 p.m. where they saw the injured security officer bleeding profusely from his head, the affidavit states.
Morant was then taken into custody by police.
He was charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempt of robbery, criminal attempt of theft by unlawful taking and other related charges, according to online court documents.
Morant was taken to Adams County prison in lieu of $250,000 bail and has a formal arraignment scheduled for May 21.
His attorney could not be reached for comment.
