Man in custody after firing shots at Cleveland security and police officers
CLEVELAND, Ohio May 2 2017— An off-duty Cleveland police officer returned fire Sunday night after a man in a car shot several rounds toward a group of police and security guards in downtown Cleveland, police say.
One man is in custody, but he has not been formally charged. Police arrested him at the hospital after they learned he had been shot, Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.
The 25-year-old who was arrested suffered a gunshot wound to his calf, Ciaccia said.
The incident happened about 8 p.m. Sunday outside Red Space at Superior Avenue and East 24th Street.
Security tossed out several people after a fight broke out at a party being held inside the building, according to Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia and a police report.
A man fired several shots from a white car at police officers and security guards as they headed back inside the venue, Ciaccia said. A round struck the building’s window.
An off-duty officer who was working secondary employment at the time returned fire, Ciaccia said. The car took off and Cleveland police were called in to investigate.
The department’s use of deadly force investigation team will review the incident.
The 25-year-old man later showed up at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wound, a Cleveland police report says.
He told police that he was leaving a party when he was shot by an “unknown person,” according to Ciaccia and the police report.
The man was booked into the city jail about 2:30 a.m. Monday on suspicion of felonious assault, jail records show.
