7 family members injured in crash with private security prisoner transport
ALTAMONT IL May 20 2019 — A family of seven was injured when their sport utility vehicle was rear ended by a private security prisoner transport van early Saturday morning on Interstate 70 in Effingham County.
The collision occurred when the westbound Security Transport Services of Kansas van struck the rental SUV at approximately 12:33 a.m. in the left lane at milepost 80 about 2 miles west of Altamont, reported the Illinois State Police.
According to the press release, the van contained two guards and four prisoners.
These individuals were treated on scene for minor injuries and released.
The SUV contained a family of seven from Buffalo, N.Y., including three adults and four children ranging ages 4-10. Abbot Emergency Medical Services took the two adult passengers and the 10-year-old child to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham for treatment of injuries. The four other family members took themselves there for treatment and were released.
Another motorist witnessed the collision and remained on scene to assist the first responders. The Altamont Fire Protection District responded to the collision and assisted with traffic control.
The van’s driver, Cheryl L. Walker of Homestead, Florida, was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for following too closely. The SUV’s driver, Aireol A. Ormand, 28, of Buffalo, was ticketed for improper use of left lane.
