Armored truck rolls over on I-195 in Westport
FALL RIVER MA June 13 2019 – Two occupants of an armored truck that rolled over about 8:40 a.m. Monday and came to rest on its roof in the median of I-195 near the Route 24 intersection were treated for minor injuries, according to state police.
The GardaWorld armored truck was headed eastbound when the accident occurred near White’s of Westport, just past where Route 24 south drivers turn left to head eastbound onto I-195, near where the entrance lane from Route 24 south merges with the three-lane highway.
Morning commute traffic backed up in both directions on I-195, as well as Route 24, as state police secured the scene, said State Police Lt. Tom Ryan.
The crash is under investigation by state police, said Ryan, who as of Monday afternoon was unable to offer details about the circumstances of the crash or the victims due to an issue with the computer network used by state police.
Ryan said the two occupants of the armored vehicle were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of “minor” injuries. He could not immediately provide the victims’ age, gender or place of residence.
The GardaWorld vehicle was transporting currency, he said.
The security company sent a second vehicle to the scene of the crash, and the currency was transferred to the second vehicle without incident.
Traffic was affected for hours as lanes were closed to tend to the scene and investigate. The scene was cleared and traffic returned to normal around 11:30 a.m.
