Cleveland man stole security guard’s gun, threatened him with it during foot chase
CLEVELAND, Ohio July 5 2019 – A Cleveland man stole a gun from a security guard’s belt and threatened him with it during a foot chase in the city’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood, court records say.
Travon H. Sayles, 21, is charged with aggravated robbery in the incident that began outside a Liberty gas station on Kinsman Road near East 145th Street in Cleveland, according to court records.
He is not in custody, but a warrant was issued for his arrest in the June 19 incident.
Sayles grabbed a Smith & Wesson handgun from the uniformed security guard’s belt after two women got into a fight at the gas station, court records say.
The 21-year-old guard, who works for a private security company, was separating the two women just before 7 p.m. when he felt a tug on his duty belt. He turned just as Sayles took the gun, police reports say.
The guard also told investigators that he recognized Sayles from high school, police reports say.
The guard chased Sayles south on East 146th Street and into a backyard. Sayles then turned and pointed the gun at the guard, police reports say.
The guard asked if Sayles was going to shoot him, police reports say. He then pepper-sprayed Sayles.
Sayles ran away and jumped over a fence. The guard last saw him running through other backyards.
Cleveland police officers searched the area but could not find Sayles.
Sayles’ criminal history includes a pair of misdemeanor convictions stemming from a 2018 domestic violence incident in Cleveland, court records say.
