Greenville SC security help police nab stabbing suspects
GREENVILLE, S.C. July 25 2017
Greenville police said a weekend stabbing on North Main Street that sent three people to the hospital is no cause for community concern.
Russell and Eric Roth face three counts of attempted murder, police said.
Investigators said the stabbing was reported Saturday about 11:50 p.m. after the men got into a verbal altercation outside of Sharkey’s Pub. Both were reported to be intoxicated, according to police.
Public Information Officer Johnathan Bragg said the father and son become enraged and stabbed the victims in the torso and chest area.
Officers are still trying to determine what led to the altercation.
Bragg said the stabbing was an isolated crime and not a random act.
The hospital listed two men as critical when they were first hospitalized, but they have been upgraded to stable and are no longer in the critical care unit, Bragg said. Their names have not been released.
Another man was released from the hospital on Sunday, Bragg said.
Private security officers hired by a nearby restaurant called Ink and Ivy assisted police immediately after the crime, Bragg said. The security guards were off-duty Greenville Police officers, Bragg said.
“The three officers that were working Ink and Ivy responded to the altercation,” he said. “They were here within seconds.”
Bragg said officers found and arrested the Roths in the Richardson Street Parking Garage. One of the men had injured his own fingers during the attack, Bragg said.
Police found the knife believed to be connected to the incident between Sharkey’s and where the men were arrested.
“We were very fortunate to have five extra duty officers downtown, which was exceptionally busy,” Bragg wrote in a statement. “These officers were able to mass, manage and quickly settle what was described as a chaotic scene.”
