Navy sailor shot and killed after fleeing traffic stop on Little Creek base
VIRGINIA BEACH VA August 4 2019
A sailor was shot and killed late Friday after fleeing a traffic stop on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, according to a Navy news release.
The sailor, who has not been identified, was spotted driving erratically on base around 10 p.m. Security personnel attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped away toward gate five, at the intersection of Shore Drive and Independence Blvd.
Personnel activated gate security barriers and the sailor changed course, losing control of his vehicle and striking a gas pump at the Navy Exchange Mini Mart, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Beth Baker said.
The man fled on foot and was shot after struggling with security personnel.
Two Navy security personnel were treated on scene for minor injuries.
Baker said she did not know if the man, a junior enlisted sailor, had a weapon or if alcohol or drugs were a factor. She said he led security personnel on a chase that reached around 60 miles per hour.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating.
The sailor’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
