Security officer attacked, held at gunpoint at metro Atlanta-area mall
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. Sept 3 2019– A woman is grateful her husband is OK after she says a man put a gun to his neck in a mall bathroom.
Channel 2’s Alyssa Hyman was at Arbor Place mall, where the man works a second job in security. He did not want to be interviewed because of the ongoing investigation.
Hyman spoke to the man’s wife, Amanda McDonald, who said the whole incident was terrifying.
“A man put a gun to the side of his neck, asking for his phone, his money, his wallet,” McDonald said. ”Honestly, it scared me to death. I don’t know what I’d do without my husband.”
McDonald asked Hyman not to identify her husband or what he does, but she did say he carries handcuffs, which seemed to scare the would-be robber.
“He paused and kind of pulled the gun away from his neck just enough that my husband grabbed that hand, and they started fighting over the gun,” McDonald said. “(My husband) managed to get a few licks in on him.”
McDonald said eventually, the attacker took off running with another man, possibly a lookout.
The two men got away, but only with a pocketknife.
“The police were called, and they showed up very quickly,” McDonald said.
Hyman contacted the Douglasville Police Department and to mall officials but has not heard back.
McDonald said she just wanted to tell her husband’s story as a warning to others.
“You shouldn’t have to be scared about going into a bathroom in a mall,” McDonald said. “It’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s very frustrating, and it’s very scary for people.”
McDonald said there are surveillance images of the suspects, but they are still waiting on mall security to release higher-quality images. She said they are also exploring legal action.
