Security guard tries to tackle one of two men during attempted smash-and-grab at Taylor mall
Taylor MI Sept 12 2019 Police in Taylor are investigating an attempted smash-and-grab Monday at Kay Jewelers inside Southland Center, 23000 Eureka Road.
Information on the incident is limited, but Taylor officials said two black men were unsuccessful in an attempt to smash the glass counter and take showcased jewelry.
According to officials, a mall security guard tried to tackle one of the men, and during the ruckus, he threw his hammer at the guard.
The hammer struck the guard in his face, but he reportedly was not seriously injured.
The men fled in a white Chrysler 300.
Taylor police were able to get a license plate number on the vehicle, which is registered to an owner in Detroit.
Nothing was reported stolen during the incident. The store closed for the day after the incident.
This is the second attempt at a smash-and-grab at the Kay Jewelers store this year.
Back in February, there was chaos at the mall as a man used a sledgehammer in an attempt to break the store’s glass case and grab jewelry.
According to a witness in that incident, a woman said the man pushed her and her sister and told them to get down before pulling out the sledgehammer and a gun.
Mayor Rick Sollars later said a gun was not involved.
Prior to that, Southland Center was the scene of yet another incident, this time at J.B. Robinson in December 2018.
In that caper, two men used a hammer to smash a glass case inside the jewelry store.
The glass breaking was mistaken for gunfire and in the confusion the incident was reported as an active shooter situation.
People took off running for safety as the culprit smashed the case.
Southland Center was evacuated at the time, but it was eventually determined that there was no shooting and no one was hurt.
Police from neighboring communities responded to the center for assistance in that December case.
