Security guard accidentally shoots, kills 62-year-old woman
Miami-Dade FL Nov 10 219
A woman died after police said she was accidentally shot by a security officer Friday afternoon in southwest Miami-Dade.
Miami-Dade Police said they responded to a call of shots being fired in the 10900 block of Southwest 184th Street just after 1 p.m., confirming that a woman had been shot in the back.
The victim, identified as 62-year-old Arnitryce Crawford, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Police said there was no verbal or physical altercation before the shooting and that it appeared to be an accident.
“Why would someone even be playing with a gun in a public setting or doing whatever,” the victim’s son, Vernon, questioned as he fought back tears.
The security guard, a 52-year-old man, is cooperating with authorities, police said.
A witness who works in the same building that the incident occurred in says that the security guard, who according to him had only been working there for only three days, was carrying the gun when it went off.
Investigators are not only working to determine how the incident unfolded, but they are also looking into the nature of the business.
“We have received information that there may be the possibility of gaming machines at the establishment,” officials said.
Residents in the area say that people visit the business to gamble on machines inside.
Investigators said that they will determine what criminal charges that the security guard may face.
