Lynden Washington police chief dies after being struck by truck
LYNDEN, WA Nov 18 2019— The interim police chief of Lynden died Wednesday, one day after he was hit by a truck while crossing the street.
Investigators told the Bellingham Herald 79-year-old Michael Knapp was on-duty at the time and did not see the truck coming as he crossed.
He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center Tuesday night with critical injuries to his head and spine.
A 19-year-old man driving the pickup truck cooperated with investigators, and criminal charges were not expected.
Knapp previously served as Ferndale’s police chief for 11 years, before leaving that department in 2016, according to the Herald.
On Wednesday, Knapp’s family released a statement through Harborview Medical Center:
“Michael was a family man that touched many and will be sorely missed. He offered so much to his family, friends and community. Thank you for allowing us this private time to cherish his memories and life. There will be a celebration of his life at a future date. “
Police agencies from around Western Washington shared their condolences on social media Wednesday.
