Suspicious person shot by police after attacking security-police at Nugget Casino
CARSON CITY, Nev. Aug 20 2017 Authorities responded to a deputy-involved shooting at the Nugget Casino in Carson City Friday, according to the sheriff.
Ken Furlong confirmed the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, on the south side of the building.
A deputy arrived to the scene on a report of a suspicious person and responded with assistance from Nugget security.
The deputy and two security officers from the Nugget tried to detain the suspect. The altercation lasted about two minutes, with the suspect cutting the deputy on the forehead, before the deputy at some point shot the suspect, Furlong said. Preliminary investigation suggests the deputy fired on the suspect five times, Furlong said in a release Saturday.
The suspect suffered gunshot wounds to his body and limbs, and he was taken to Renown in Reno. The injured deputy was taken to Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center, according to Furlong, and he was released later Friday.
Both the deputy and suspect were talking when they left the scene and expected to survive, though exact injuries are unknown.
No identities were provided, though Furlong described the deputy involved as a career law enforcement officer.
Furlong on Saturday said it was verified that the suspect is not a Carson City resident, but a known transient homeless person from outside of Carson City who likely arrived in town earlier in the day.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will take over the investigation, per the regional officer-involved shooting protocol.
