Officer down: Georgia deputy killed in pursuit of fleeing suspect
Long County GA. Jan 24 2020
A deputy in Long County, Georgia was killed early Thursday morning after police say he was involved in a vehicle crash while in pursuit of a suspect who was on the run.
According to Long County Sheriff Graig Nobles, an unidentified sheriff’s deputy lost control of his squad car and crashed into the woods during the chase.
ABC 22 News reported that the chase began around 3 a.m. when an officer with the Ludowici Police Department noticed a driver allegedly running stop signs while driving through the city. That officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver took off down Highway 57.
The unnamed Long County deputy then joined in the pursuit as the driver headed toward McIntosh County. At one point during the chase of the fleeing suspect, the deputy reportedly lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into the woods.
Sheriff Nobles said that the deputy’s car penetrated the wood line and came to rest approximately 100 feet into the forest.
Emergency crews immediately transported the wounded officer to the Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, but it was too late. The deputy was pronounced dead from his injuries.
No further details have been released about the deputy who was killed, but other agencies are asking for prayers during this difficult time.
