Security guard foils two Burlington HSBC bank robberies in five days
Halton Canada Jan 25 2020 A security guard is again being credited with quick-thinking actions after a suspect tried to rob the same Burlington bank for the second time in less than a week.
The most recent incident at the HSBC bank at 2500 Appleby Line occurred around 5:30 p.m. when a man tried to get into the branch, but couldn’t because the security guard locked the door before he could enter, according to Halton Regional Police.
“Access was not gained to the bank as they had previously locked the door,” said Halton Const. Steve Elms.
This same bank was nearly robbed less than a week ago, according to police, when a gunman got out of a car and approached the bank.
Police said when a security guard saw the individual coming, they locked the bank’s front door.
The armed suspect demanded the security guard open the door, however, the security guard refused.
The would-be robber then returned to his vehicle and left the area.
No one was injured during this attempted robbery.
A second man was seen waiting in the car.
Police have yet to say whether the same suspect tried to rob the bank twice, but investigators are exploring that possibility.
HSBC customer Bernadette DeLeo said the security guard’s actions should be lauded.
“He’s keeping watch and stopping this (robbery) from happening and he deserves a lot of credit for putting himself in harm’s way,” she said.
