Concord NH high school student committed suicide at school
CONCORD, N.H. Feb 6 2020
Police in New Hampshire are investigating after an apparent suicide at a high school in Concord.
Attorney General Gordon MacDonald and Concord Police Chief Bradley Osgood said the incident happened Wednesday morning at Second Start Alternative High School on North State Street.
“While one individual is dead from an apparent suicide, no additional students, faculty or staff were physically harmed,” MacDonald and Osgood said in a joint release.
“The individual is a 17-year-old male. He died with a single gunshot wound to himself,” Concord Police Deputy Chief John Thomas said.
All available Concord police officers were dispatched to the school around 10 a.m. after a caller reported that shots were fired.
A short time later, police found the victim and determined that the shooting was self-inflicted.
No additional students, faculty or staff were hurt, authorities said.
The school was evacuated after the incident, police said.
“We are shocked and saddened beyond words,” Second Start said in a statement. “We will face the coming days by supporting each other and we will have counselors available for our students and staff.”
Frank Bass, the interim superintendent of schools in Concord, released a statement about the incident:
“Our students are safe. Concord Police is on the scene and in control of the situation. We can provide no further details at this time, and we determined that it is not necessary to put any of our schools into lockdown,” Bass said.
The Concord district and others contract with the Second Start program.
Police said the incident is contained and remains under investigation.
