Shoplifter who pulled gun on security captured by police
ANCHORAGE, Alaska Feb 6 2020
Anchorage police say that a shot was fired by a police officer pursuing a shoplifting suspect believed to be armed with a handgun who was attempting to run into Shockwave Trampoline Park in the Northway Mall.
APD was first called in reference to an adult male shoplifter who reportedly confronted a Carrs security guard at the Northway Mall. An altercation ensued and the shoplifting suspect revealed a handgun and ran away according to police.
When officers arrived on scene, a male matching the description was seen running eastbound outside the mall.
Officers confronted the man as he was attempting to enter Shockwave Trampoline Park, and one officer fired a single shot.
No one was injured.
The suspect was taken into custody. APD says a stolen weapon was recovered from the scene.
The officer’s use of force will be investigated by the Office of Special Prosecutions first and APD Internal Affairs to determine if department policy was violated.
The officer will be placed on four days of administrative leave, and their name will be released 72 hours after the incident.
APD asks anyone who witnessed the incident but haven’t yet spoken to police to call APD Dispatch at 311.
