Metro Nashville police officer saves 15-month old girl from choking while sitting in traffic
Nashville TN March 23 2020 In the right place at the right time, a Metro Nashville police officer acted quickly to save the life of a 15-month old girl who was choking, as he sat in traffic on Friday.
North Precinct Sergeant Matt White, a six-year Metro Nashville Police Department veteran, had exited Briley Parkway at County Hospital Road at 5:40 p.m. and was waiting for the car in front of him to turn.
However, the car suddenly rolled forward, striking a semi-truck.
The 19-year-old driver of the car happened to look at her daughter, Sylvia, in the back seat, discovering that she had lost color in her face and her lips were blue. She reached for Sylvia in panic, and in doing so, she took her foot off the brake, rolling into the semi-truck.
As White was getting out of his police car to respond to the crash, the young mother ran up to him with her limp child.
White immediately began infant CPR and successfully dislodged an item blocking the girl’s airway. She began to breathe again and color returned to her face.
She was transported to a hospital as a precaution.
